Letters to the Editor

Over the line

To the Editor:

I read Editor Dan McCaleb’s column on page 2 every Sunday. I get a great laugh sometimes. I get great information other times. But in last Sunday’s column, he made my blood boil.

A news entity shouldn’t be a lobbying tool – Op-Ed or not! McCaleb also consolidated his entire column on selecting the County Board chairman into one sentence and plastered it on page 1: “[County] Board knows better?” As a newspaper, he stepped way over the line.

I was glad to see the newspaper’s Editorial Board put in its place when county voters defeated Jack Franks’ referendum by a 2-to-1 margin. I have always believed the paper should report, not create news or be a lobbying tool for anyone, including your own paper.

I have held elected office on a County Board and two different cities in a different state prior to moving here 20 years ago. I also find it very disrespectful to the voters when newspapers endorsed candidates, even though they have endorsed me every time. The Northwest Herald does a fantastic job in educating voters through candidate questionnaires and research on numerous issues. Why not just let us voters decide beyond that point?

Every time you do these types of endorsements or lobbying, you actually are doing what you blamed the “no” voting members of the County Board for not doing in the new referendum issue being discussed. They didn’t do what you wanted them to do, so you belittle them with the comment that they think they are smarter than the voters.
