Overnight snowfall slows morning commute

Motorists are urged to use caution this morning as snow is expected to continue during their morning commute.

The majority of the Chicago area and surrounding suburbs received around .5 inches of snow overnight, causing for some slick road conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago. Snow should continue throughout the morning, but not more than an inch is expected.

All crews from the McHenry County Division of Transportation began clearing and salting the roadway at around 3:30 a.m. Friday, said Mark DeVries, county maintenance supervisor.

“The roads are looking pretty good, but there are some slick spots out there,” he said. “It will be a little slower during [morning] rush hour with snow coming down, so allow extra time to get where you need to be.”

Several dispatchers reported vehicle accidents due to the roadway conditions this morning. At the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, slick roadways were reported on Lily Pond Road in Woodstock and on Route 120 near Cresthill Avenue in Lakemoor.

A total of .4 inches of snow was reported at O’Hare International Airport overnight, according to the weather service.

Once the snow tapers off, there is a chance of flurries the rest of the day, meterologist Ben Deubelbeiss said. Temps will creep in the low 20s Saturday, with no real chance of precipitation.

Sunday a low-pressure system will move across the area, bringing with it a mixed batch of precipitation, Deubelbeiss said. That will include some freezing rain and sleet, which is expected to turn into rain as temperatures climb into the low 30s.
