Icy weather hits northern Illinois

An ice storm brought slick roads to McHenry County today.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office reported there were at least two minor vehicle accidents due to the road conditions Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory for McHenry County from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, and later extended it until 9 p.m.

“We had a mix of very little snow that turned into sleet and transitioned over to mainly freezing rain,” Mike Bardou, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said late Sunday afternoon.  “The bulk of that is starting to exit the northwest part of the metro area.”
