Tigers claim state title

BLOOMINGTON — The Crystal Lake Central girls competitive dance team accomplished something special Saturday afternoon that no other squad has done before.

The Tigers won the Class 2A State Dance Championship with a final score of 90.33 at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. The Tigers edged out Lake Forest (89.88) by just .45 of a point.

It is particularly important because this year marked the first time that the Illinois High School Association has recognized competitive dance as a sport. It was previously pegged as an activity in past years.

It was pandemonium when the Tigers found out they had won and a slice of the aftermath was captured in an 18 second YouTube video that was tweeted out by the IHSA Twitter account.

The girls were hugging and crying while celebrating the first-ever state crown in the crowded Coliseum.

To get the opportunity to compete for the title, the Tigers had to advance out of the preliminary round on Friday which featured 90 squads. By the end of the day 30 teams advanced to the finals held on Saturday.

No other area teams made the finals.
