Don’t rig system
To the Editor:
There has been a lot of news recently that Republicans in some swing states that keep going Democratic (e.g. Pennsylvania, Michigan, etc.) have decided it’s time for desperate measures to try to eke out some kind of victory. In these states, and only in these states, Republicans support changing the rules of presidential elections so that their candidates might have a better chance of winning electoral votes (by switching from a winner-take-all system to a system that apportions electoral votes by some percentage of the vote). In solid red states (Texas, Alabama) Republicans are seeking no such changes.
I would strongly urge Republicans to tread very lightly in seeking these changes. Winning elections is only a partial victory. It also helps to win the overall arguments, the popular vote and hearts of a majority of voters.
