Police: Girl's death case of mistaken identity

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says the death of a 15-year-old girl appears to be a case of mistaken identity involving gangs.

Hadiya Pendleton died Tuesday afternoon at a park about a mile from President Barack Obama's home on Chicago's South Side. Last week she performed at events in Washington for Obama's inauguration.

McCarty said at a news conference Wednesday that the gunman apparently belongs to a gang that believes the park is their territory. McCarthy says the gunman believed Hadiya and her group may have been members of a rival gang. But police say there's no indication that's true.
