Mistakenly freed killer arrested while watching TV

CHICAGO – A convicted murderer from Indiana who was mistakenly released after a court appearance in Chicago was recaptured while watching TV at a home in northern Illinois.

Cook County Sherriff's Office spokesman Frank Bilecki says police set up a perimeter and then burst through the door of a townhome in Kankakee, about 60 miles south of Chicago.

He says police took Steven Robbins by surprise and that he put up no resistance shortly before 11 p.m. Friday. That was two days after the mistaken release.

Bilecki says it appears the owner of the home might know an acquaintance of the convict.

A bond hearing was set for Saturday morning. Bilecki says that by midday, Robbins could be back in Indiana, where he was serving a 60-year sentence for murder.
