Lakemoor doubles parks and rec events
LAKEMOOR – After hiring a part-time parks and recreation coordinator about four months ago, the village of Lakemoor has more than doubled the number of events planned for the year.
An ice-fishing derby was the first event John Guenther coordinated since taking the job in October.
Guenther served on the Parks and Recreation Department board for about three years, almost since its creation, before becoming a village employee.
While turnout for the derby wasn’t particularly high, board Chairman Ralph Brindise said he hopes that word of mouth will bring out more and more people as the village ramps up its events.
Before Guenther, volunteers organized all events, which sometimes led to scrambling.
“It’s my responsibility to get the volunteers, get all the supplies, the venue, just basically get it from step A to Z,” Guenther said.
He said he thinks he can add programming without more cost, and said the budget he plans to submit will be less than what was allocated last year.
Besides the ice-fishing derby, Guenther and the advisory board plan to offer six movies in the park over the summer instead of one, and add an Easter egg hunt in March, a craft show and a variety of other events.
The board used to concentrate on events for younger kids. Guenther said he is trying to broaden the appeal of events to include teenagers and adults. Among possibilities, he said, are a three-on-three basketball and skateboard tournaments at this year’s Lakemoor Fest.
“Some may succeed. Some may not,” he said.
He has put out a survey out – available at www.lakemoorparks.net – to see what people are interested in.
But some things would be difficult to implement, he said, because Lakemoor doesn’t own a large enough facility to host indoor events. He said he hopes that if the village builds a new village hall, it will have space to accommodate programming.
