Rational discussion

To the Editor:

Rather than focus on the misinformation, obfuscation and innuendo that characterized Patrick Donlea’s Feb. 4 response to my Jan. 9 letter, I’d like to give a big shout out to Bill and Mary Winkel for their Feb. 5 comments.

I’m sure there are many people who think that “responsible gun owner” is an oxymoron. I have never subscribed to this idea. While I do not believe in owning guns (and concede to knowing very little about them), I count a number of hunters among my friends and acquaintances.

Like Mr. and Mrs. Winkel, they don’t see the need for weapons that fire multiple rounds. Does anyone really doubt that if the assailant in Connecticut were equipped with handgun(s) or even a rifle, that at least some of those children would be alive today?

Thank you to the Winkels for trying to inject some rationality into the discussion. It is only through a dialogue among people who are not narrow-minded or have agendas that we can begin to arrive at a fair conclusion.
