Our view: Progress on new hospital

We’re pleased to see progress on Centegra Health System’s plans to build a new hospital in Huntley.

Centegra officials are scheduled to discuss the project with the Village Board and village staff at a meeting Thursday night.

The $233 million, 128-bed hospital is expected to break ground in the fall at Centegra’s existing health care campus near Haligus and Reed roads. This project will be an economic boon to Huntley and the entire region. More importantly, it will provide residents who live in the area better access to health care.

About 800 construction jobs will be created as it’s being built, and an additional 1,100 permanent jobs are expected to be added after the new hospital opens, scheduled for 2016.

Part of Thursday’s meeting will focus on Centegra’s decision to build the hospital toward the middle of its Health Bridge and ambulatory care mall, near Algonquin Road, a half mile south of the original location.

We don’t see the proposed move as a big deal.

In addition to Thursday’s meeting, two public informational meetings have been scheduled at Huntley’s municipal complex. The first is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19; the second for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 6.

We encourage members of the public who have any questions about the hospital project to attend one of these meetings.

After the Great Recession stalled new development in McHenry County and just about everywhere else, it’s exciting to see a project of this size and importance close to getting started.

We can’t wait for the first bulldozer to break ground.
