Stewart’s offensive potential – Sveum believes he’s capable of hitting 15 to 25 home runs and driving in 75 to 100 runs – along with his defensive capabilities makes him the front runner for the starting job. But Luis Valbuena will push him for playing time.

Sveum acknowledged that Stewart wasn’t always around the clubhouse last season following surgery in July, though he said it “wasn’t a major issue.”

“I think he could have been around the team a little bit more, yeah,” Sveum said. “And I told him that. It’s nothing he doesn’t know. For whatever reasons, nobody told him he needed to be anywhere.”
