Chicago cop shoots driver who nearly struck him

CHICAGO – A Chicago police officer hanging onto the hood of a suspect's van after nearly being run over fired into the vehicle and wounded the driver.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the incident took place on the city's West Side late Saturday morning.

Police spotted the man standing on a known drug corner. Camden said he took off running into a nearby alley when officers stopped to try to talk to him.

The man then got into a van and nearly ran over the officer while swerving to avoid a squad car blocking his path. The officer jumped onto the front of the van and fired.

The driver was hospitalized in critical condition. The officer had injuries to his foot.

Camden says officers searching the van found drugs.
