Chicago joins with U.S. Navy for science education
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago and the U.S. Navy are teaming up to give students more opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the partnership between Chicago and the U.S. Department of the Navy will provide an intensive summer program for more than 1,000 students.
Students also will be able to enroll in computer science classes at the City Colleges of Chicago, and will receive year-round mentoring.
U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus says the country needs sailors and Marines who are prepared to do complex tasks in an increasingly technical military.
He calls the partnership "good for Chicago, good for the Navy and great for the future of America."
