To the Editor:
Although, as Illinoisans, we haplessly reside in the most corrupt of American states (sorry, New Jersey and Louisiana), and have endured a dizzying succession of corrupt governors – which didn’t start with George Ryan or end with Rod Blagojevich – I always expected a bit more from local politicos.
Unfortunately, even that modest consolation will be callously dashed if the McHenry City Council approves the superfluous mega multiplex gasoline terminus that augurs to replicate the gigantic refueling depot at Little America, McMurdo Sound.
Yes, it’s true that the signal ineptitude of McHenry’s mayor, who was supposedly “taken by surprise” by the relocation of the city’s Walmart tax cash-cow, was quite an embarrassing fiasco, especially because the big spenders were addicted to that now-vaporized sales-tax moolah.
But that mega mistake won’t be rectified by sacrificing on the altar of greed and whacked-out urban planning, a parochial elementary school or church, or further congesting an already choked traffic node with an utter monstrosity.
If this hare-brained scheme proceeds, I humbly suggest the town be rechristened “Pottersville” – George Bailey’s dystopic urban nightmare in “It’s a Wonderful Life” of what can befall a nice place fouled by stupid cupidity.
