CRYSTAL LAKE – It’s not too late to submit an entry for the Crystal Lake Park District’s Ugliest Yard Contest.
In July 2011, a powerful storm swept through Crystal Lake and brought down a 125-year-old bur oak tree at Main Beach.
The McHenry County Nursery/Glacier Oaks Nursery assist the park district with the harvest and cultivation of 170 acorns from that tree.
In the spring, the park district will plant 100 new seedlings in park district parks, this spring.
The 2013 Crystal Lake Park District Ugliest Yard Contest was created to select recipients of the Main Beach bur oak seedlings.
To be eligible to receive a seedling, submit an ugly yard photo by Feb. 28 to firstname.lastname@example.org or bring it in to the Crystal Lake Park District Administrative Office, 1 E. Crystal Lake Ave. (attn: Ugliest Yard Contest).
Include your name, address, telephone number and email address with the photo.
The district will send a confirmation that the photo was received and when to pick up a seedling in May.
Entrants must be Crystal Lake Park District residents. The first 70 entrants will receive a 1-gallon bur oak seedling.
One grand prize winner will receive a landscape design by park district landscape architect Ann Viger and a $500 gift certificate from Two Amigos Landscaping Inc. The grand prize winner will be announced April 1.
Anyone can vote for the Ugliest Yard from March 1 to 30 via the Crystal Lake Park District website at www.crystallakeparks.org/2013UgliestYardContest.htm, at the Administrative Building or at the Crystal Lake Park District booth at the Crystal Lake Business Expo at Crystal Lake South High School on March 23 and 24.
