PR's Whiteout to honor 'heart' heroes

Prairie Ridge has dubbed today’s 7 p.m. game with McHenry at its “Whiteout” game and will honor three heroes who helped save a life last month.

Wolves boys basketball coach Corky Card, his wife Betsy and senior Alex Koss helped to save custodian Dan Pauling, who had a heart attack on Jan. 11. Pauling was stricken after Prairie Ridge played Huntley and the Cards and Koss, some of the only people remaining in the building, found him.

Koss rushed to get the defibrillator from one end of the gym while the Cards attended to Pauling, who was conscious and responsive, but sweating and breathing hard. Corky Card, a physical education teacher with years of emergency response training, shocked Pauling once, then performed CPR and chest compressions until Pauling was revived.
