To the Editor:
McHenry County College recently hosted an informational meeting on natural gas production and hydraulic fracturing. This was presented by the Sierra Club, which has a strong history of supporting natural gas for the generation of electricity because of its clean burning and low carbon output.
It soon became apparent that this meeting actually was a propaganda presentation aimed at killing natural gas. What happened? When did the Sierra Club flip-flop and why?
A little Internet research and a May 31, 2012, Wall Street Journal editorial gave some clues. Basically, the gas industry was so successful in lowering costs that the “bridge fuel to the 21st century” became the future. It was going to render wind power, solar and ethanol noncompetitive.
The free market was making a decision and the Sierra Club did not like it. All of the Middle East oil nations are threatened by our gas abundance, for obvious reasons. Russia is an opponent because we soon may be able to supply Europe with natural gas and break Vladimir Putin’s economic extortion of Europe. U.S. energy independence would have economic and world political implications we can only dream about.
It would be great in our polarized world if we could go to a credible, accurate and neutral source for information. Instead, we must be on guard and look for hidden agendas, selective facts and even manufactured facts.
Yes, Illinois needs to develop drilling laws to ensure casing integrity, fracking fluid safety and more. There is much more to this fracking story then we saw at MCC.
