Southern Ill. school district announces layoffs
CARBONDALE – A southern Illinois school district is laying off one-third of its teachers and half of its non-certified staff because of cuts in state funding.
The move agreed upon Wednesday by the Giant City School District 130 board affects seven teaching positions, six support staffers and the school librarian for the next school year.
The district in recent years has eliminated its art program, increased fees for participation in extra-curricular activities and put energy-saving initiatives in place.
