Cause for celebration

To the Editor:

McHenry County College is a community college. By its definition, it serves the local community. There is no competition with other community colleges for students. Therefore, what the other colleges charge per credit hour has nothing to do with what MCC should charge. What matters is the quality of education that can be offered here at the most affordable price.

Nine percent tuition increase in 2011. Three percent increase in 2013. The very students who need this college the most are being priced out of the market. Mr. Parrish and Ms. Rueda, thank you for voting no to that 3 percent increase at Thursday night’s meeting! Well done. We need a lot more trustees like you.

I would strongly suggest that every square inch of space and every hour of time that can be used must be utilized before there is any talk of adding buildings. No monuments to materialism, please. And please stop spending tens of thousands of dollars doing “studies” and “studies of studies” by companies that stand to benefit from the results.

My husband and I very much enjoyed the classes that we took at MCC when it was still using the old ITT building. There were serious students, dedicated teachers, and where they met made no difference to the education that they received.

By the way, having the lowest cost per credit hour in the state would be true cause for celebration.
