Durbin, Kirk to introduce gun legislation

WASHINGTON — Illinois' two U.S. senators — Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Mark Kirk — say they and other senators will introduce a bill to crack down on gun trafficking and straw purchasing.

In a news release, they announced Monday the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act of 2013 will be considered Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill combines legislation Durbin and U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy introduced to crack down on those buying guns legally to provide them to those who can't legally own them and anti-gun trafficking legislation Kirk and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand have introduced. Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins is also a sponsor.

Durbin says the bill would create the first specific prohibitions in federal law to deter straw purchasing or gun trafficking.
