Garbage truck catches fire near Richmond

Published: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 9:16 a.m. CST

RICHMOND – A garbage truck was severely damaged Tuesday after catching fire, according to the Richmond Fire Protection District.

Crews were called to Harts Road in unincorporated McHenry County near Richmond at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a vehicle fire, according to a news release. Firefighters arrived to find the engine and the rear of the truck engulfed in flames.

A 911 call was made after the driver of the vehicle noticed an orange flicker in his side mirror, pulled over and found the engine on fire, the news release states. The back of the truck was full of recyclable materials.

Because the driver was unable to dump the contents of the truck due to a hydraulic failure, firefighters cut holes in the top of the box to extinguish the plastics and cardboard inside, fire officials said.

No one was injured during the incident.
