Illini women fall to Wisconsin; Iowa tops NU
HOFFMAN ESTATES – Morgan Paige scored 18 points, including two free throws with 3 seconds remaining, and 11th-seeded Wisconsin upset sixth-seeded Illinois, 58-57, in the first round of the Big Ten tournament Thursday at the Sears Centre.
Illinois, which trailed 54-44 with 6 minutes left, took a 57-54 lead on Amber Moore’s 3-pointer with 42 seconds left. Tessa Cichy made two free throws to get Wisconsin within a point.
The Badgers (12-18), who will play Purdue in today’s quarterfinals, were 21 of 21 from the free-throw line, led by Paige, who made all 10 of her foul shots. Jacki Gulczynski had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Cassie Rochel had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Wisconsin outrebounded Illinois 41-29.
Ivory Crawford led the Illini (16-13) with 14 points. Moore scored 13 and Adrienne GodBold had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Illinois led 30-20 at halftime. Crawford had nine points in the half to lead all scorers.
Iowa 60, Northwestern 55: Morgan Johnson and Jamie Printy scored 18 points apiece, and Iowa defeated Northwestern.
Bethany Doolittle added 10 points and Samantha Logic grabbed 11 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (20-11), the seventh seed in the tournament. They advance to meet 21st-ranked Nebraska, the Big Ten’s second seed, in today’s quarterfinals.
Iowa never trailed in the game. It was 30-26 at halftime and the Hawkeyes led 57-42 with 3 minutes to go before the Wildcats battled back to make it close.
Kendall Hackney led Northwestern (13-17), the No. 10 seed, with 13 points and four steals. Karly Roser scored 11 points, Alex Cohen scored 10 and Dannielle Diamant had a game-high 13 rebounds.
The teams also played Sunday in Evanston, with Iowa winning, 62-45.
