Quinn at Chicago church to talk about violence

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn is at the church of one of Chicago's most prominent pastors to talk about combatting street violence.

The governor was invited to speak at Greater St. John Bible Church, led by the Rev. Ira Acree (ACK'-reeh).

The Chicago Democrat told The Associated Press Sunday that public officials need to address the problem.

His speech comes as Chicago has seen a spike in murders — but also after he delivered a state budget that includes more money for public safety but big cuts for education.

Quinn's address also comes as Republicans and fellow Democrats have talked of challenging him in 2014.

The stop wasn't on the governor's public schedule. He says Acree is a friend and he'd promised to come for a while; this was his first chance.
