U of I food, building workers voting on contract

CHAMPAIGN – More than 700 food and building-service workers at the University of Illinois are voting on a contract offer from the University.

The two bargaining units belong to the Service Employees International Union. If either of the groups rejects the offer when the votes are counted Sunday, they would begin a 3-day strike at midnight Monday.

The university says managers will take over the work that needs to be done if there is a strike.

Negotiations began in June, and a federal mediator has been brought in. Wages are one big issue. Others are provisions regarding retaliation against employees in some instances, and contract workers.

A union spokesman says results of the balloting will be announced late Sunday afternoon.
