FOX LAKE – A McHenry man faces robbery charges after skipping out on a haircut and stealing $250 in cash Friday, according to Fox Lake police.

William Bolton, 36, was arrested and charged with a felony count of armed robbery Saturday while staying at the Fox Lake Motel on Route 12. He also was wanted on an outstanding McHenry County warrant for violating an order of protection.

Bolton received a haircut at Cost Cutters, located in the first block of West Grand Avenue in Fox Lake, about 7 p.m. Friday, according to a news release. Instead of paying for the haircut, he pulled out a large kitchen knife, demanded money and fled the store with $250 in cash, police said.

Based on a false phone number Bolton gave to an employee before the haircut, investigators performed a photo lineup with the victim, which eliminated that person as the possible offender, police Lt. Mark Schindler said.

Investigators searched area motels Saturday and found that a person matching the description given by the Cost Cutters employee had checked into the Fox Lake Motel.

A photo of Bolton positively identified by the victim linked him to the robbery, police said. He later was found at the motel with clothing items he allegedly wore during the robbery.
