To the Editor:
In response to the “Vote for Perschke” letter published in the Northwest Herald on March 8.
Many parcels of vacant land in Lakewood subdivision were reassessed this year up to 300 percent of last year’s value. None of this land has been for sale or has sold in many years.
Several homeowners visited the assessor’s office and were told they could not appeal the increase unless they had a soil test. The increased assessment was based on a uniformity issue.
Many of these parcels are landlocked and underwater during heavy rains. It seems the best-case scenario for an appeal is through an attorney with a fee appraisal and a soil test. These expenses can be costly, and we know assessments rarely go down. A large proportion of the homeowners in Lakewood subdivision are senior citizens on fixed incomes.
I will cast my vote for McHenry Township assessor for Mary Mahady.
