Gotcha politics

To the Editor:

The March 11 letter, “Too Busy?,” by McHenry County Republican Precinct Committeeman Joyce Story was offensive in its outlandish accusations. Ms. Story blasted state Rep. Jack Franks for not meeting with her and her band of right-wing zealots about such issues as abortion. She claimed Franks was ducking her group because he could not meet with them at times when they had arrived unannounced at his offices in Woodstock and Springfield.

I personally saw Franks meet with Story and at least 25 members of her group March 9 at Wisted’s in Marengo for more than an hour. Franks explained to her that he is in Springfield more than four days a week, and that during that time he is scheduled without a break most days. He also made it clear that the event was specifically held for constituents to engage their legislator on issues they find important. Yet watching the whole scene, it seemed to me that the group was more interested in claiming Franks would not meet with them than discussing anything while they were actually meeting with him.

I am tired of self-serving gotcha politics. This type of partisan attack on an honest man doing a good job is reprehensible. Story and her friends ought to be praising Franks for being so accessible instead of finding fault and trying to make a political issue out of his being unavailable during unannounced visits. Let’s all take a deep breath and thank our elected representatives for working hard on our behalf.
