Village president candidate calls for debate

JOHNSBURG – A Johnsburg village candidate is calling for a debate.

Johnsburg resident Maggie Haney is challenging Village President Ed Hettermann in his bid for re-election in the April 9 consolidated municipal election.

In a news release, Haney pointed to Hettermann’s absence from a meeting with the Northwest Herald’s editorial board.

The newspaper invited mayoral and village president candidates in competitive races to meet with editorial board members for interviews to help determine whom to endorse. The meetings were not open to the public.

When Hettermann declined the meeting, he pointed to ongoing litigation between Haney and the village.

He said he was willing to answer any and all questions but said to “engage in an exchange with her present would not be in the village’s best interest.”

He did not return a call asking if he was going to agree to a debate.

Haney declined to comment further about the debate or what issues she would like it to cover.
