Add Marian to FVC
To the Editor:
As a person who has a strong vested interest in the students of McHenry County and the community as a whole, I would like to express my view on incorporating Marian Central into the Fox Valley Conference.
In the interest of full disclosure, I am an alumnus of Marian Central.
I am not an avid sports fan, but I do understand the importance of high school sports in building discipline, community, ethics and healthy competition among young people, skills they need throughout their lives.
One of the best examples I’ve seen of healthy competition by two teams of skill and character was the championship game between Woodstock North and Marian Central last fall.
The teams were well-matched, and the stands were full. The mood was festive, and the young men played their hearts out. It was a community event in its highest form.
McHenry County would benefit from more events such as this. Now I find out the FVC is excluding the Marian Academic Bowl team from the FVC, in which it competed the past 10 years.
I have to ask, is this what is best for our young people?
With Marian Central in the FVC, athletes and scholars will be competing with friends they have had contact with in other county sports, schools and activities. They can take their cue from the examples of the adults in our community that are willing to compete against each other and still are able to overcome differences and get along.
