Leanne and Mark Konicek offer both the best exercise gear, and their training expertise with customers.

At a time when obesity and fitness are huge national concerns, Leanne Konicek and her husband, Mark, brought Barrington Running Co. to town. Walking into their downtown store at 133 Park Ave., you’ll get some of the best brands in running and fitness, but you’ll also get help following through with fitness goals as the store also is home to a workout area.

Leanne gave Barrington Life a look into how business has been since it opened less than a year ago, and why Barrington is a great home for runners.

How long have you been in business?

We opened in July of 2012.

What has reception been like since you opened?

The reception has been extremely positive. One response that we hear over and over again is, “This is what Barrington needed.”

Where did your interest in fitness and running come from?

Mark, my husband (co-owner) grew up in Barrington, and comes from a large family of runners. We both are certified personal trainers and triathlon coaches. We grew up being involved in sports, and being active is part of our lifestyle today.

Aside from clothing and equipment, what kinds of other services do you offer?

Other services we offer are one-on-one and small group personal training, for children, adults, and seniors. We also have morning and evening boot camp classes, and yoga on Monday and Wednesday nights. Also, ongoing Compu Trainer classes for the cyclists and triathletes are available. If you are coming in to get fitted for running shoes, we do a few assessments, and also offer a free video gait analysis. We then offer recommendations on shoes that are specific to your needs.

What are your favorite local running spots?

If you are looking for a great hill workout, we like Barrington Hills. Citizen Park provides a crushed limestone path, which is a little more forgiving on the body versus the road.

Why did you want to open a business in Barrington?

We chose Barrington because this is a community filled with runners and triathletes. It’s a great place to train and enjoy the beauty that Barrington offers.
