Road closures for Western Bypass expected in April

ALGONQUIN –The Illinois Department of Transportation continues construction of the Route 31 Western Bypass in Algonquin with additional road closures beginning in April.

The $33.3 million project includes construction of 2.11 miles of a four-lane divided highway, a diamond interchange, four new bridges, retaining walls and noise abatement walls west of downtown Algonquin.

Motorists are advised of delays as traffic on Algonquin Road will remain one lane in each direction between Main Street and Meyer Drive.  Lane closures on Algonquin Road are expected through fall 2013, according to a news release from the village.

Lane closures also occur on Main Street (Route 31) beginning in April.  South Main Street will have one lane closed between Edgewood Drive and Huntington Drive.  Additionally, North Main Street will have one lane closed between Cary-Algonquin Road and Linden Avenue.  Motorists should note that one lane of traffic in each direction will be open during construction on Main Street, according to the release.

In addition, Huntington Drive will be closed between Circle Drive and South Main Street. Traffic will be detoured to Edgewood Drive. This closure is expected to last until summer 2014.

Message boards along these routes will be posted in advance of the closures and specific dates will be made available online. Alternate routes are suggested. Motorists are urged to use caution as workers will be present in these areas during construction.

Towne Park will remain closed to allow the construction of the Western Bypass, along with a new 100-space parking lot, realignment of Crystal Creek, and integration of the park with the Prairie Path recreational trail.  Towne Park is expected to be closed until summer 2014.

Construction information will be available throughout the project from the Illinois Department of Transportation and may be viewed on the village's website at www.algonquin.org. Individuals may also sign up for Algonquin e-News to receive monthly updates.
