Make vote count in McHenry

Published: Monday, April 1, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

On April 11, 2011, voters in the city of McHenry were asked whether the city treasurer should be changed to an appointed position. Two-thirds voted no.

However, after finding out that Mayor Sue Low was able to make the change because of home rule, she brought the proposal to the city council. On a vote of 5-1 against the voters’ wishes, she created an ordinance to change the position to an appointed one.

Several aldermen defended their actions by stating that the voters had no idea what they were voting for, were uneducated on the subject and they were elected to make that decision for them.

Make your vote count. I am voting for Steve Cuda on April 9.
