SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a "Sister Lake" agreement with a Mexican governor to improve recreational and commercial uses of bodies of water in both states.

The Democratic governor is visiting Mexico on a trade mission. He announced Friday the agreement with Fausto Vallejo Figueroa (FOW'stoh vuh-YAH'-hoh fee-guh-ROH'-uh), the governor of Michoacan (mee-cho-KAHN').

The pact involves Lake Michigan and Lake Patzcuaro (PAHTZ'-kwah-doh). Patzcuaro is one of the world's highest lakes. Residents call it "the door to heaven."

The agreement calls on the governors to cooperate in dealing with exotic and invasive species and plants, fishing population research, water quality and pollution.

Quinn's trip to Mexico is focused on promoting tourism, water technology, agribusiness and manufacturing.
