Field Museum receives pieces of Russian meteorite

CHICAGO (AP) — The Field Museum in Chicago has received dozens of pieces of a meteorite that exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains in February.

The museum received the nearly 2 pounds of small meteorite pieces on Tuesday. The meteor injured nearly 1,500 people and caused widespread property damage over Russia's Chelyabinsk district. The meteorite is now known as the Chelyabinsk Meteorite.

Museum officials say a collector worked with meteorite hunters in Russia to get the meteorite pieces. The collector donated them to the Field Museum.

Field Museum meteorite curator Philipp Heck says scientists will study the pieces "to see what they can tell us about the history of the solar system."

Other pieces will be on display for the public to view starting Wednesday.
