Former mayor wins in Island Lake

ISLAND LAKE – Despite nearly getting kicked off the ballot, Island Lake mayoral candidate Charles Amrich won Tuesday evening.

Amrich defeated incumbent Mayor Debbie Herrmann in a 1,275 to 357 vote, according to preliminary numbers, which do not include provisional and late absentee ballots.

Amrich, who was Island Lake's mayor from 1985 to 2005, headed the For the People slate against Herrmann's United for Progress party.

He successfully challenged the Island Lake Electoral Board's decision to remove him from the ballot, and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office is investigating a robo-call warning residents against Amrich.

The For the People slate swept the election Tuesday, also ousting incumbent City Clerk Connie Mascillino. Teresa S. Ponio won, 1,197 to 449.

No incumbent trustees had decided to run again, but all three For the People trustee candidates – Mark Beeson, Keith Johns and Anthony P. Sciarrone – won, defeating Josh Rohde, Ken Nitz and Ed McGinty.
