MRI confirms Cubs' Clevenger suffered oblique injury

CHICAGO – Cubs catcher Steve Clevenger will be sidelined approximately six weeks due to left oblique strain.

The MRI confirmed that Clevenger suffered an oblique injury on the final swing of Saturday's 3-2 loss against the Giants. Clevenger, who also missed time last year because of a right oblique strain, has been put on the 60-day disabled list to open a spot on the 40-man roster after the Cubs claimed right-hander Kameron Loe off waivers from Seattle. Clevenger said the pain was so bad it felt like he was stabbed with a knife, and he had trouble breathing.

With Clevenger unavailable today, the Cubs will be one player short on the bench and will not have any left-handed options to pinch hit.

Edwin Jackson (0-2, 5.73 ERA) starts today looking for his first win in a Cubs uniform. The Giants send Tim Lincecum (1-0, 4.91) to the mound as they try to take three of four games from the Cubs.
