Cubs make roster moves, Epstein discusses Boston tragedy

CHICAGO – One off day and the Cubs' roster undergoes a bit of a makeover.

The Cubs activated second baseman Darwin Barney from the 15-day disabled before Tuesday's game against the Texas Rangers. They also added right-hander Kameron Loe to the 25-man roster and purchased the contract of right-hander Kevin Gregg. Infielder Cody Ransom was claimed off waivers from the San Diego Padres. Ransom, 37, has played in 326 games in the majors hitting .215 with 21 home runs and 85 RBIs.

In corresponding moves, left hander Hisanori Takahashi and infielder Brent Lillibridge were designated for assignment and right hander Rafael Dolis was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

It's a battle between left-handers on the mound tonight as Travis Wood (1-0, 1.46 ERA) starts for the Cubs while Derek Holland (0-1, 2.40) gets the call for the Rangers.

The Cubs are hosting the Rangers at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2002. Since the Cubs were off yesterday, Jackie Robinson will be honored today instead with all players wearing No. 42.

A day later, the bombing at the Boston Marathon is still being felt. Theo Epstein's twin brother Paul ran in the race and finished approximately 45 minutes before the explosions near the finish line. Epstein initially spoke to his brother right after he finished the race, but once he learned about the situation he tried to call Paul. About 20 minutes later he got through and heard he was OK. Epstein lived about one block from the site of the bombing.

"You see the darkest side of humanity with someone wanting to harm innocent people, then you see the best side of humanity too when you see people running toward an explosion like that to help out people who are in harms way," Epstein said.
