Jacobs sends students to state WYSE competition

The H.D. Jacobs High School Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Team sent four students to the state WYSE competition.

Leading up to the state competition, the WYSE Team finished in first place at a regional competition on Feb. 15 at Elgin Community College.

During the competition each student takes college-level tests in two of six categories. Awards are given to first, second and third places for individual scores.

Ten of the 14 team members received medals in biology, chemistry, computer science, English and physics in Elgin. The team in total received 17 medals, the most in school history, the school said in a news release.

In March, the team finished in third place at the sectional competition at Northern Illinois University, with four students, Chad Franzen, Justin Richman, Rachel Rim and Robert Thomas, advancing to state on April 8 at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

At state, Franzen and Rim finished fifth in English, Richman finished seventh in physics, and Thomas finished fifth in chemistry, the school said.
