Cuts hurt hungry, poor

To the Editor:

The reality of sequestration (5.1 percent across-the-board cuts) is bleak for about 600,000 women and children who will lose nutrition assistance through WIC (for prenatal and new baby care) and 100,000 formerly homeless people will lose housing again.

The fiscal 2014 House-proposed Paul Ryan budget complicates and worsens this by shielding defense spending and balances the budget in 10 years on cuts alone, with the majority of cuts targeting programs that assist poor and hungry people.

Please call U.S. Sens. Mark Kirk and Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren to tell them that any package that replaces sequestration must protect programs for hungry and poor people.

Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.
