McHENRY – For more than two years, the Ladies of the McHenry VFW Auxiliary have organized overseas care package collection efforts.

They have packed thousands of donated food and supply items, which were then sent to overseas servicemen and women.

Another “Care Packing Effort” will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. April 29 at the McHenry VFW 4600, 3002 W. Route 120.

This time, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary will be united with the Ladies of the McHenry American Legion Auxiliary. For the first time, all packages will be blessed by a chaplain from Centegra Hospital – McHenry.

Donations are requested, as well as the names and overseas addresses to send these care package supplies to.

For each name given into the Auxiliary’s care, several care packages are sent over to be shared within that soldier’s unit or company.

Items such as foot powder, cotton swabs, lip balm, water flavor packets, eyedrops, beef jerky, tuna and chicken packets, Spam, dried fruit, power bars, snacks, tube socks, cat flea collars, disposable razors and nail clippers are some of the key items that are requested.

There are collection drop-off boxes at the Johnsburg Public Library, the McHenry Public Library, the McHenry VFW and Century 21 Roberts and Andrews at 3717 W. Elm St., McHenry.

For those who might wish to organize a supportive collection effort through a group, organization or business, these ongoing Auxiliary Care Package Efforts take place throughout the year, roughly every two months, as funds and donations of supplies allow, with the next one planned for before July 4.
