Illinois program fights underage drinking

MUNDELEIN – The Illinois Liquor Control Commission has started a new underage drinking awareness program.

The program was announced Thursday at a ceremony in the Chicago suburb of Mundelein. It’s called “Your Actions Matter!” Officials say the state asked teenagers to create a logo and slogan for the new public awareness campaign. The winners were 15-year-old Ally Pennington from Fairfield Community High School in Wayne County and the Illinois Students Against Destructive Decisions Student Advisory Board.

Liquor Control Commission Executive Director Gloria Materre says the goal is to reach adults “who think it is acceptable to give alcohol to minors.” Retailers across Illinois will participate by displaying decals, drink coasters, posters and signs that promote the program.
