Western Illinois toughening admissions standards

MACOMB — Western Illinois University says it is toughening its admissions standards.

The Macomb school announced Thursday the new standards will take effect with the fall 2014 semester. The school will increase the necessary high school grade point average and ACT composite score. Specific standards will be announced in September at Illinois Association of College Admissions Counseling conferences statewide.

If students are on the margins of the new standards they will be given an evaluation and review. The university's Council of Admissions and Graduation Standards and the Faculty Senate recently voted to support the change. It also has the approval of university president Jack Thomas and other school officials.
