Northern Illinois man named Veteran of the Month

CHICAGO (AP) — A northern Illinois man is being honored for his more than 30 years of service to his fellow veterans.

The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs named Jonathan Lehuta of DeKalb County the Veteran of the Month for April.

Lehuta began his service in the Navy in 1974 as a weather observer. After completing active duty he went on to earn a degree in meteorology. He later was assigned on the USS Okinawa as a Weather Officer and served in Spain, Illinois and California.

Lehuta now is on staff at Northern Illinois University, where he is adviser to the NIU Veterans Club. He also serves as master of ceremonies for the local Memorial Day Parade and is a founding member of the DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission.
