WAUKEGAN — A Deerfield man has been sentenced to 47 years in prison for killing his girlfriend's mother with a baseball bat in 2010 in the woman's suburban Chicago home.
Daniel Baker was found guilty but mentally ill in November. The 25-year-old man received a 47-year sentence on Monday. He faced up to life in prison. Baker's defense attorneys said he was insane at the time of 50-year-old Marina Aksman's death in her Vernon Hills home on April 1, 2010.
Police say Aksman wanted to end Baker's relationship with her 20-year-old daughter, Kristina. Authorities say he forced his way into Aksman's Vernon Hills home and killed the woman, striking her between six and 15 times. He then fled with Kristina. He was arrested days later in Montana.
