McHenry knocks off Huntley in girls soccer

The McHenry girls soccer team picked up its first Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win of the season Thursday, taking down first-place Huntley, 2-1.

Avalon Senn-Raemont scored both goals for the Warriors (6-8-1 overall, 1-3 FVC Valley), both coming on Alexis Morales assists. Senn-Raemont’s second goal came minutes into play after an hour stoppage because of lightning.

“A lot of the games we’ve played this season, the girls have worked hard, but we’ve struggled to put the ball in the net,” McHenry coach Jim Nelson said. “It’s good to see them take advantage of opportunities, especially with a good team like Huntley.”

Beth Parks scored an unassisted goal for the Red Raiders (14-3-1, 4-1).

Woodstock 3, Johnsburg 2 (OT): At Woodstock, freshman Brecken Overly tied the score with three minutes to go, and Emma Thill scored in overtime to earn an FVC Fox Division win for the Blue Streak. Overly also had an assist on a goal from Anna LoPatin.

Rachel Tobias made eight saves in an effort Woodstock coach Mike Golda called her best of the year for Woodstock (4-12, 2-3).

Goals from Maddie Himplemann and Olivia Jansen gave Johnsburg (9-7, 3-3), a lead that didn’t last.

Hampshire 5, Woodstock North 2: At Hampshire, Nicolette Kruczek scored on a Shelby Nicholson assist, with Jen Conley adding a goal on a Marta Sobey assist for the Thunder (3-11, 2-7) in their FVC Fox loss.

Marengo 1, Harvard 0: At Marengo, Logan Brettschneider scored on a Mikaela Broling assist for the Indians (5-6-1, 4-6-1) in their Big Northern Conference East Division win over the Hornets.

Marian Central 3, Montini 0: At Lombard, Robin Wenzel, Rebecca Turski and Jacqueline Guilbeault scored goals for the Hurricanes (6-5 overall, 4-2 Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division) in their division game.

BASEBALL

Cary-Grove 4, McHenry 2: At Cary, Brandon McCumber allowed four hits with five strikeouts in a complete-game shutout for the Trojans (16-5, 10-3) in their FVC Valley win. McCumber also went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Andrew Brierton added a run scored and an RBI.

Adam Mattson and Cole Hoeppel-Tranter each went 1 for 3 for the Warriors (15-10, 9-5).

Grayslake Central 6, CL Central 4: At Crystal Lake, Parker Harold went 2 for 3 with a double, triple, run scored and RBI for the Tigers (10-9, 4-8) in their FVC Fox win, with Connor Skrypek going 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI.

Johnsburg 5, Hampshire 3: At Hampshire, Nick Brengman picked up the win in relief for the Skyhawks (5-13, 4-10) in their FVC Fox win, giving up three hits over four innings with four strikeouts.

Brengman and Kevin Kordik each went 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored for Johnsburg in their FVC Fox win. Dillon Kuhn went 2 for 3 for the Whip-Purs (9-11, 2-10).

Richmond-Burton 5, Burlington Central 3: At Burlington, R-B (11-5, 8-2) scored four runs in the first inning to earn a BNC East win.

Marian Central 8, Guerin Prep 0: At River Grove, Edgar Ross improve to 4-0 for the Hurricanes (8-8, 4-5), pitching a three-hit shutout in their SCC win.

Tanner Spoden and Mike Koscielniak each went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Marian.

SOFTBALL

Cary-Grove 7, Jacobs 6 (8 inn.): At Algonquin, the Trojans (15-2, 6-1) scored a run in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the eighth to win their FVC Valley game.

Amy Clemment went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, with Jamie Deering, Sarah Leudo and Erin Olson each adding an RBI and run scored. Sarah Murray and Nicky Chapa each had a run scored and an RBI on three hits for the Golden Eagles (10-9, 3-4).

McHenry 7, CL South 0: At McHenry, Cassie Arns allowed three hits with seven strikeouts for the Warriors (14-6, 5-2), with Carly Mattson adding a three-run home run in their FVC Valley win.

Madison Perrine went 1 for 2 with a walk for the Gators (10-7, 2-6).

Huntley 8, Dundee-Crown 1: At Carpentersville, Haley Spannraft gave up no earned runs over seven innings with eight strikeouts for the Red Raiders (15-7, 3-5), with Jessica Shields and Katelyn Behrens each adding two hits in their FVC Valley win.

Lauren Mercado and Lauren Gerard each had two hits for the Chargers (3-12, 0-7).

Woodstock North 5, Woodstock 4: At Woodstock, Bria Romine went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Thunder (4-11, 3-6), with Paige Busch and Kaitlin Chamberlain each adding an RBI in their FVC Fox win.

Jorie Karafa went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Blue streaks (2-12, 0-6), with Kara McCaughrean adding an RBI and two runs scored.

Grayslake North 6, Hampshire 5: At Hampshire, Jen Hurst went 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Whip-Purs (6-14, 1-4) in their FVC Fox loss, with Sara adding two runs scored on two hits on a game postponed from April 15.

Prairie Ridge 8, CL Central 0: At Crystal Lake, Kirsten Stevens fanned 14, walked one and allowed four hits in a complete game shutout win for the Wolves (18-2) in FVC crossover play. Maddie Drain went 3 for 3.

Sara McConnell had a double for Central (10-5).

Burlington Central 5, Richmond-Burton 3: At Burlington, Katie Kroll hit a double and a triple and drove in a run, but R-B (5-9, 4-6) took the BNC East loss.

Alden-Hebron 3, Harvard 0: At Hebron. Cassandra Clauss and Marissah Knoll each provided an RBI of support for Sparkle Lagerhausen’s nonconference win in the circle for the Giants (13-3).

BOYS TENNIS

McHenry 5, Hampshire 2: At McHenry, Dennis Quitalig and Nick Higgin led a doubles sweep for McHenry with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 1 spot. Aldair Arriola won at No. 3 singles for the Warriors (9-6).

Elisha Hougland and Dylan Keeling won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles for Hampshire.

Prairie Ridge 6, CL Central 1: At Crystal Lake, Hayden Dzurisin won at No. 3 singles in straight 6-0 sets as the Wolves swept singles play in their FVC win.

Matt O’Connell and Billy O’Connell won at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, for the Tigers.

CL South 5, Johnsburg 2: At Crystal Lake, Chris Roemeling and Pat O’Connor won at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, for the Gators in their FVC win.

Johnsburg’s Kevin Wells won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6.

Grayslake North 5, Dundee-Crown 2: At Carpentersville, Chad Wanger (No. 1 singles) won, 6-3, 6-1, and Colin Stiefer (No. 3 singles) won, 6-0, 6-4, for the Chargers in their FVC loss.
