EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Madison County Chief Circuit Judge Ann Callis has resigned.

The 48-year-old announced her decision last week. She'll be replaced by Judge David Hylla, who was elected.

Callis was sworn in as an associate judge in 1995, named a circuit judge in 1999 and became chief judge seven years later.

In her tenure, she opened special court programs for veterans and nonviolent drug offenders. Madison County Board Chairman Alan Dunstan says Callis changed the county's image when it cames to the judiciary.

Callis has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the U.S. House. Her office says an announcement of her political plans will come soon.

Hylla practiced law for more than two decades. He served as city attorney in Madison and Venice before he was elected circuit judge in 2006.
