Winnebago County residents seek OK for chickens

Published: Monday, May 6, 2013 5:30 a.m. CDT

ROCKFORD – An online petition is urging Winnebago County officials to allow residents to raise chickens in their back yards.

The Rockford Register Star reported that the petition is aimed at County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen. It asks him to help change the county law to allow residents to raise hens for eggs – arguing that it supports a local and sustainable food system and is free fertilizer.

Christiansen said he’s had a couple requests to change the county’s code to allow backyard chickens but hasn’t addressed it because the county’s been focused on crime.

He said the chicken request eventually will go before a county committee for review.

Machesney Park village officials are ahead of the county. A village committee will meet Monday to consider an ordinance allowing hen coops.
