Durbin the wrong target

To the Editor:

In a recent letter to the editor, Rich Pytka of Crystal Lake argued for term limits and campaign finance reform.

I agree that we should give more attention to these issues. Thank you, Mr. Pytka, for bringing these to our attention.

However, you made a poor choice of the political personage to illustrate your cause. You do not advance our discussion of these important issues by citing Sen. Dick Durbin as an example of “a good part of what is wrong with our political system today” and one of the “dysfunctional politicians who have gridlocked the country.”

Yes, Durbin is a moderate liberal, but he has a long history of working cooperatively across the aisle to reach reasonable compromise.

Durbin’s kind of moderate political figures are being widely booted out of office to be replaced by rigid ideologues on both sides of the aisle who cannot or will not work with each other. These are the cast of miscreants who have gridlocked our basically wonderful form of government, not Durbin.
