Mr. and Mrs. Janssen

LAKE IN THE HILLS – Hubert and Nelly Janssen of Lake in the Hills are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, Hubert’s 90th birthday and 60 years in America with a dinner celebration for family and friends, including family coming from Holland. The event will take place at D’Andrea Banquets hosted by the Janssen family.

Nelly Bynen and Hubert Janssen were married May 12, 1953, at Saint Oda Church in Ysselsteyn, Holland. They came to American on a ship from Holland, landed at Ellis Island and then moved to Brady, Mont.

He has been a lifelong farmer and owned Janssen’s Very Select Egg Farm in Elgin. He retired in 1987. He is one of the biggest sports fans ever, watching all sports, but especially loving the Cubs, the Bears, the Hawks and the Bulls. He also enjoys card games, including playing solitaire on the computer.

She retired as a special education teacher in 1992 in Keeneyville, where she had worked since 1966. She is a voracious reader, enjoys being physically active, playing cards, and as a longtime teacher has kept her desire for learning by discovering and actively using the Internet.

They feel blessed to have enjoyed a lengthy and active retirement. They tremendously enjoy spending time with their loving children and grandchildren. They have traveled extensively with many trips back to Holland to visit with family member and friends. They have also done several cruises, with Alaska being one of their favorites.

They are a very devoted couple through life’s ups and downs, know the true meaning of unconditional love for each other, and also love and really enjoy caring for their dear pet companion, Wiley, their Shih Tzu.

They belong to the ever-so-young seniors group at St. Margaret Mary Church in Algonquin, where they have some dear longtime friends, whom they socialize with playing bingo and going to the theater, restaurants and occasional trip to the casino.

They have three sons, Lambert (Vicki) Janssen of Marseilles, John Janssen of Milwaukee and Jerry (Sheri) Janssen of Marengo; and a daughter, Mary Beth (James Fleischman) Janssen-Fleischman of Palatine.

They also have seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
