ORLANDO, Fla. – Crystal Lake native Joe Affrunti advanced to an upcoming U.S. Open sectional qualifier after firing a 70 in a local event Wednesday at Orange Tree Golf Club.

Affrunti, who graduated from Crystal Lake Central in 1999 before playing at Illinois, was one of four players to card a 70. He now advances to the sectional event at Woodmont Country Club in Washington in early June.

"It was just a really solid round. I played smart, aggressive and made the putts I had to," Affrunti said in a text message Thursday. "My game is coming around, which is nice."

Affrunti earned his PGA Tour card in 2010 but is recovering from shoulder surgery and earned a major medical exemption from the tour. He has 13 events to keep his tour status. He is playing on the Web.com Tour. He said he expects to begin playing PGA events later this year, but his 13 guaranteed events could carry over into 2014.
